Ocean Carbon Removal At Scale

Fiora Mara fights climate change using ocean science and engineered design to remove carbon and store it deep below the ocean for over a millennium.

How We Started

Fiora Mara began when Adam and Sunny decided that slowing emissions wasn’t enough to heal the planet. We wanted to create a way to remove carbon that was both scientifically rigorous and gentle on the planet. What started as a climate fellowship capstone project, with a team of 14 professionals deep diving into ocean systems and early concepts, grew into a shared mission to give the ocean the tools to absorb more carbon, safely and naturally.

How Nature Became Our Partner

At Fiora Mara, we remove carbon by partnering with one of nature’s most efficient systems: seaweed. Our seaweed draws carbon from both the atmosphere and the ocean, and we deliver it to the deep ocean floor, where it remains safely stored for over a millennium. In doing so, our method also supports marine life and helps to prevent ocean acidification.

Our Solution

Deploy Seaweed Farms

We release many 100% biodegradable, floating micro-farms into the ocean. Our solution initially will keep the farm afloat near the surface of the water to promote growth.

Growth Phase

As the seaweed grows, it absorbs significant amounts of carbon, as well as nitrogen and phosphorous. Promoting local biodiversity while mitigating risk of oceanic dead zones.

Sinking Phase

Once our seaweed has matured, our sinking mechanism activates and sinks the entire micro-farm with the seaweed to the deep ocean floor. Where the carbon is sequestered at a rate over 94%.
