Our aim is to achieve affordable, sustainable, and scalable carbon capture through deep ocean seaweed cultivation and carbon sequestration.
Our Story
Adam introduced the idea for Fiora Mara during the Autumn 2023 ClimateBase Fellowship program, gathering a 14-member team to develop, validate, and refine the idea under the tagline: “Sinking Seaweed to Save the World.” The team collaborated with marine biologists, bamboo experts, and marine lawyers during the program culminating in a well-researched plan to bring the solution to market. Sunny continued from the original team to help bring the project to reality.
The Power of Seaweed
Seaweed has the natural power to extract carbon from the atmosphere and ocean permanently – in addition to other harmful pollutants. Our seaweed is sunk to the deep ocean floor where we ensure long-term carbon storage while contributing to the de-acidification of our oceans.
A 100-square-meter square seaweed farm absorbs 66 tonnes of CO2, 20 times more than a land-based forest of the same size.
Our Solution
Deploy Seaweed Farms
We release many small, 100% biodegradable, floating seaweed farms with seeded grow lines into the ocean. Our solution includes a “leaky buoy” that initially helps keep the farm afloat.
Growth Phase
As the seaweed grows, it absorbs significant amounts of green house gases such as carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous. Promoting local biodiversity while mitigating risk of oceanic dead zones.
Sinking Phase
Once the seaweed matures, the buoy fills with water and sinks with force, bringing the seaweed with it. At a depth of 2,000 meters, the carbon is sequestered at a rate of 96%, our farms sink beyond 10,000 meters.
